3 Skin Care Tips for Winter

In the Northern Hemisphere, the first day of winter is December 22. While this day has the fewest hours of sunlight during the whole year, winter sunrays can still be harmful and lead to premature aging. How can you enjoy the winter months and still protect your skin? Read our 3 skin care tips for winter!
1. Know the dangers of too much sun exposure
While being outdoors during winter has many health benefits, too much sun exposure can lead to premature aging (wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, sagginess, etc.) and even skin cancer. Common skin cancers include melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. According to WebMD.com, an estimated 40%–50% of fair-skinned people who live to be 65 will develop at least one skin cancer. While skin cancer is treatable, by limiting your sun exposure now, you can help protect your body’s largest organ for many years to come.
2. Learn how to protect yourself against the sun
The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are the most harmful to your skin. Many people think that UV rays are strongest during the summer months. Not true! Dr. Quenby Erickson, a dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon at St. Louis University Hospital, says they are equally intense during all daylight hours throughout the year. For those who enjoy winter sports — especially skiing — Dr. Erickson says it’s important to wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask and sunscreen on all exposed skin. Remember, sunscreen does not block all UV rays. Use wisely and responsibly.
3. Begin a skin care routine to help reverse the signs of aging
Dermatologists all agree that establishing a skin care routine for cleansing, moisturizing and protecting the skin can help reverse the aging process.
